Why won't he Stop Biting His Nails?

The problem with an adult nail biter is that those close to them see the issue, even when this individual does not. Bitten, jagged, and ravaged nails can look far more frightening then it would sound. Nail biting does not seem as if it would be such a problem, but it can become physical unhealthy, unattractive, and can even hold a person back from professional or social success. To put it more simply if someone’s grandfather bit his nails when he was tense or nervous then there’s a good chance this is a trait that’s been handed down for generations.

A compulsion to perform a certain behavior is a part of every human being, and totally normal. Everybody has a few habits that show up when feeling tense or bored. The problem with nail biting, as a stress relieving behavior is that it mars the appearance, and can cause pain or injury.

The key to stopping the nail biting is to recognize stress as the probable cause, and to find ways for this individual to deal with tension and anxiety in a more productive way.

Arguing or nagging a nail biter very often has the opposite effect than intended. This is due to the increased pressure on a person who is experiencing some form of stress. Being supportive of this individual and finding ways to cope with stressful situations can end the nail biting.
